How Can a Geriatric Care Manager Help?

If you are seeking practical support and ways to reduce your stress while caring for an aging family member, you may want to consider contacting a Geriatric Care Manager or GCM.

A professional GCM is a health and human services specialist, often with an advanced degree in Social Work, who helps families caring for an aging loved one. The GCM usually works in a private practice. He or she is an experienced resource for families of older adults with chronic needs, including Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Respiratory Diseases.

A GCM can help with a broad range of issues that challenge family caregivers; these issues span from medical and financial matters to troubling emotional and psychological concerns.

To decide if a GCM may be a good choice for your family, ask yourself:

Are the problems you and your loved one facing becoming greater and more complex over time?

Are these issues more than you can comfortably manage? Do you have a sense of being overwhelmed on many days?

Are your overall demands and responsibilities now so great that you are unable to provide the desired level of supervision and attention your loved one requires?

We’ve collaborated with Geriatric Care Manager, Amy Fuchs, who serves New York and New Jersey, as well as other professionals in this area of expertise.
